SAS Nagar, June 30- Mayor of SAS Nagar Municipal Corporation Mr. Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu has written a letter to the Chief Minister demanding allotment of land for city waste disposal and improvement in urban planning policy.
In the letter, he has written that despite being a planned urban center, SAS Nagar is currently facing a serious challenge due to the absence of an approved place for scientific and environmentally sound waste disposal. He said that this problem is turning into a major crisis as garbage is piling up across the city.
He has written that the Municipal Corporation has made several efforts to identify a suitable place. But the lack of available land and continuous opposition from neighboring villages have hindered this work, and given the gravity of the situation, assistance at the state level is necessary.
He has written that instructions should be issued to Jimada in this regard to allocate a suitable piece of land for the development of solid waste management facility.
In the letter, they wrote that a widespread, systemic issue in the state's urban development framework needs immediate attention as provisions are routinely made for essential services like water supply, sewerage and roads in new urban areas, but no provision is made for solid waste management. This omission creates complications and protests later (when land acquisition becomes necessary).
They demanded that solid waste management should be recognised as a major infrastructure requirement for which dedicated land and facilities should be planned and it should be incorporated in every new urban or housing scheme approved by the Housing and Urban Development Department.
They demanded that the Chief Minister should immediately consider the matter and implement long-term policy reforms by ensuring necessary action in this regard.
