Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, March 16: Following complaints from the residents about the lack of necessary traffic signs and basic necessities in the recently launched City Surveillance and Traffic Management System in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali), MLA Kulwant Singh today held an emergency meeting with the district administration and directed the Municipal Corporation and GMADA to immediately install traffic signs on the roads with the help of police.
He, while holding a meeting with Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal, SSP Deepak Pareek and Municipal Corporation Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh and other officials at the District Administrative Complex today, made it clear that CCTV surveillance should not be only a means of revenue collection, but its purpose should be to provide comfortable transport facilities to the common people.
He said that people have brought to his notice that due to this new system, they are facing inconvenience due to unclear zebra crossing, stop line and speed limit, due to which he has directed the officials of District Administration, District Police, Municipal Corporation, GMADA, National Highway Authority and Public Works Department to hold a meeting and resolve this in a time bound manner.
Agreeing with the points raised by MLA Kulwant Singh, Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal asked the Municipal Corporation to remove all the above deficiencies within a week and GMADA within two weeks. He said that zebra crossings should be open from both sides and there should be no obstruction to the people walking on them due to any footpath, pole or other structure.
He also asked to mark the stop lines afresh so that the blurred lines can be clearly visible to the people. The Deputy Commissioner also directed to install speed limit sign boards on the lines of Chandigarh so that the speed limit of light and heavy vehicles is fixed and people have clarity. He said that as per the speed limit notification of the Punjab government, the maximum speed limit in municipal corporations/municipalities is 50 kmph, which will be fixed in Mohali on the lines of Tricity.
SSP Deepak Pareek emphasized on linking the control of increasing/decreasing the timing of traffic lights with the Integrated Command and Control Center established at Sohana police station. He said that if the control of traffic signals coming at these 17 points comes to the Integrated Command Center, then the traffic on the road can be controlled in a better way.
The Deputy Commissioner asked the Municipal Corporation Commissioner to consider the suggestion of giving the control of traffic lights to the Command and Control Center. On this occasion, the SSP also suggested to restrict the entry of heavy vehicles on some roads on the basis of experience during the 'peak hours' of traffic in the city, on which the Deputy Commissioner assured to consider.
SDM Mohali Damandeep Kaur, SP (Traffic) HS Mann, Agriculture Transport Officer Pradeep Singh Dhillon, Executive Engineer Municipal Corporation and Executive Engineer GMADA, representative of National Highways Authority of India besides non-official member of District Road Safety Committee Harpreet Singh were also present in the meeting.
