Dr Jain said that thousands of strokes occur daily in India but only a few percent of patients get timely treatment.
He said that the incidence of stroke in India is much higher than the global average due to limited awareness about stroke and its preventive measures. Dr Jain emphasized that stroke remains a leading cause of disability and death, indicating the need for public understanding and early intervention.
Stroke is a leading cause of disability and death worldwide and contributes to more deaths annually than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined. Jain also explained the major symptoms of stroke which include loss of balance, drooping eyes, face, arm weakness and difficulty speaking. He said that every minute is important as 1.90 million brain cells die every minute after a stroke, so patients should be rushed to the nearest treatment center as soon as possible.
He said that recently the American Stroke Association has also revised its guidelines and recommended mechanical thrombectomy treatment for stroke patients. He said that reaching the hospital is not enough, there is a need to reach the hospital ready for brain stroke.
