KL Rahul has received support from India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir after facing scrutiny for his performance in the opening Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru. Under overcast conditions, Rahul struggled significantly, failing to make an impact in both innings as New Zealand pacer William O'Rourke claimed his wicket twice.
Rahul's lackluster showing drew criticism from fans and experts, raising concerns about his place in the playing XI. However, Gambhir firmly defended the experienced batter, emphasizing that social media opinions would not sway the team's decisions. He highlighted Rahul's impressive 68 runs off 43 balls against Bangladesh in a previous Test, indicating that he still has the team's backing.
“Social media doesn’t matter one bit. You don’t pick players based on it or what experts say. It’s crucial to focus on what the team management and leadership think. International cricket is all about judgment,” Gambhir stated in a pre-match press conference.
Despite India's disappointing defeat, where they were bowled out for just 46 in their first innings, the team remains at the top of the standings. However, the loss has put their position in next year's final at risk, with their percentage dropping to 68.06% as they prepare for two more Tests against New Zealand and a five-match series with Australia later this year.
