The attackers approached the vehicle and fired about 15 shots before fleeing. The incident was captured by CCTV cameras installed nearby. A video of the shooting on this road, one of the busiest areas of the city, has soon gone viral.
The police have launched a major operation to nab the accused. Passers-by rushed the two injured to the civil hospital and the police control room was immediately informed.
Karanvir succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. Harjit Kaur, who was referred to a hospital in Amritsar by doctors, also died on the way.
A few hours after the shooting, a social media post surfaced in which the Davinder Bambiha gang claimed responsibility for the crime. Police sources say that Bambiha has over half a dozen associates and friends, some living abroad and some lodged in Punjab jails, who are running his gang and regularly updating their activities on social media.
Bambiha’s gang members said they shot the two to avenge the murder of Gurpreet Singh alias Gora Bariyar. He was killed in a shootout near a petrol pump on the Ghuman-Sri Hargobindpur road by members of the Bhagwanpuria gang in May.
