Ludhiana, 26th July 2025- In a significant step towards promoting innovative livestock practices, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana organized an awareness cum demonstration camp on Oral Magnet Feeding at Village Moom.
The event was part of the Farmer FIRST Project (FFP) and was aimed to educate the farmers about the benefits of oral magnet feeding for livestock and its role in prevention of traumatic reticuloperitonitis, thereby enhancing animal health and productivity.
This innovatory approach was executed under the esteemed leadership of Dr. J.P.S.Gill, Vice Chancellor. The demonstration was conducted by Dr. Rajesh Kasrija, Co-Principal Investigator  of the project, along with Dr. Gurpreet Kour Tulla, Senior Research Fellow.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from livestock owners, eager to learn about this novel technique and its potential impact.
Dr. Kasrija provided valuable insights into the concept of oral magnet feeding, a method that involves administering magnets orally to dairy animals in order to prevent traumatic reticuloperitonitis which leads to diaphragmatic hernia.
He stated that whenever an animal ingests any metallic foreign body, the same gets attached to the oral magnet placed in the reticulum of the animals, thereby preventing its movement towards diaphragm.
Farmers attending the camp expressed their interest in adopting this technique for their livestock. A total of 8 families were benefited in the said camp. The Farmer FIRST Project, launched with the goal of enhancing farm productivity through innovative research and extension services, has been instrumental in introducing farmers to a variety of modern farming techniques.
The project continues to build partnerships with farmers, local authorities, and livestock experts to promote sustainable practices, and improve the overall health and productivity of the animals.
