Thane, May 28 - A man who promised to marry a 73-year-old woman in Maharashtra's Thane district has allegedly duped her of over Rs 57 lakh. Inspector Vivek Kumutkar of Vishnu Nagar police station said that the victim, a resident of Dombivali area, came in contact with the 62-year-old man through a marriage advertisement published in a newspaper.

He said that after gaining the woman's trust, the man promised her marriage and a good life in Pune. "The 62-year-old man told the victim that he wanted to buy a house in Pune and convinced her to transfer Rs 35 lakh for it," the officer said. The man also gave fake receipts and fake property documents to convince the woman.
It has also been revealed that after staying temporarily at the woman's house, the accused also allegedly stole gold ornaments worth around Rs 20 lakh. According to the police, he also allegedly stole the woman's debit card and withdrew Rs 2.4 lakh. The official said that after cheating the woman last month, the accused went missing and is now missing.
Based on the complaint of the victim, the police on Monday registered an FIR against the man under various sections. Police officials said that an investigation is underway in this regard.
