Mohali/Kharar 7th March: Advocate Chetan Sehgal (LLB, LLM), practicing in the Supreme Court of India and Punjab-Haryana High Court and a resident of Mohali, has sent a memorandum to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Punjab, DGP Punjab, ADGP Traffic, Deputy Commissioner Mohali and SSP Mohali regarding the increasing traffic congestion problem in Kharar and Mohali area.
In the memorandum, he has demanded immediate action, highlighting the seriousness of the increasing traffic congestion problem in Kharar and Mohali. He said that daily life is being affected due to increasing number of vehicles and inadequate traffic management.
Key issues that are a matter of concern:
1. Continuous traffic congestion during peak hours:
• Office going people, students and emergency services are affected due to traffic congestion on main roads from 8:30 am to 11:00 am and from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
2. Areas of special concern:
• Chandigarh to Kharar Road, Kharar Bus Stand to Gopal/KFC Chowk, Airport Road
• Kharar to Landran Road, Kharar to Phase 6 Gurdwara, and Airport Road to Aerocity
3. Impact on lawyers and court work:
• Advocate Chetan Sehgal said that traffic jams cause delays in his attendance at the Punjab-Haryana High Court and the Supreme Court, which hampers legal proceedings.
4. Lack of traffic police:
• He said that the low presence of traffic police at important checkpoints is posing a threat to personal and public safety.
5. Emphasis on issuing challans only:
• The current traffic management is focused only on issuing challans, which is causing financial burden to the people instead of solving the problem of traffic jams.
Suggestions and demands from Advocate Chetan Sehgal:
1. Traffic police deployment should be increased:
• Additional traffic police should be deployed at key points during peak hours.
2. Better traffic management plans:
• Traffic lights should be synchronized, manual control should be made during peak hours, and alternate routes should be created.
3. Road rehabilitation and innovation:
• Road widening, construction of flyovers and underpasses should be taken up immediately.
Why is urgent action needed?
• Kharar and Mohali are a central hub due to their proximity to Chandigarh and the international airport. Negligence in traffic management is affecting the daily life of the public.
Advocate Chetan Sehgal has demanded that the presence of traffic police be increased by issuing immediate instructions and high-level traffic management strategies should be implemented.
