New Delhi, June 05- The opposition Congress in the Lok Sabha on Thursday termed Pakistan's nomination as vice-chairperson of the 15-member UN Security Council's counter-terrorism committee as unacceptable. A day after Pakistan was appointed as the vice-chairperson of the 1988 main terrorist sanctions committee, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge termed the development as misinformed. The committee imposes asset freezes, arms embargoes and travel bans on terrorist organisations and their leaders.
Kharge said, "The international community should see merit in India's case that Pakistan should be put back on the FATF grey list for terror funding."
He said that Pakistan was first included in the FATF grey list in 2008 by Prime Minister Dr. India was placed on the FATF grey list after diplomatic efforts under Manmohan Singh and again in 2012 and 2018. “Making Pakistan accountable for its sins is a necessity not only for India but also in the interest of the international community,” Kharge said. “It is worth remembering that the most wanted terrorist responsible for 9/11, Osama bin Laden, was found and eliminated in Pakistan. The main planner of 9/11, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM), was also a Pakistani,” the Congress chief said. “As a responsible opposition party, the Congress urges the government to take appropriate and firm diplomatic steps to de-hyphenate India and Pakistan at the global level,” he said.
India has opposed the extension of loans to Pakistan by top global financial agencies including the IMF and ADB. India is also preparing to submit a dossier to bring Pakistan back to the FATF grey list. The FATF meeting is scheduled to be held this month.
