On October 8, 2024, the Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health at PGIMER, Chandigarh, in collaboration with the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare and Primus Partners New Delhi, organized a significant event titled "Consultation on Dietary Guidelines for Indians."

This consultation gathered esteemed public health experts, clinicians, academicians, and policymakers to deliberate on the latest dietary guidelines and the nutritional landscape in India. The event began with a traditional Lamp Lighting Ceremony, followed by a Welcome Address by Dr. Arun Aggarwal, Professor and Head of the Department of Community Medicine & SPH at PGIMER. Dr. Poonam Khanna, Additional Professor at the same department, provided an overview, emphasizing the need for updated dietary guidelines to address contemporary health challenges.
Chief Guest Smt. Anuradha Chagti, Secretary of Women and Child Development, Chandigarh, delivered a compelling speech on the crucial role of nutrition in maternal and child health, advocating for multi-sectoral engagement in implementing the guidelines. Keynote speaker Dr. Hemalatha R, Former Director of ICMR-NIN, highlighted the evolution of dietary guidelines, stressing the importance of tailoring them to meet the diverse needs of India's population.
The consultation also featured panel discussions addressing critical nutrition issues, moderated by experts like Dr. Umesh Kapil and Dr. Raj Bhandari. The first panel focused on the current nutritional scenario, while the second addressed the needs of special groups and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The event concluded with a final panel discussing stakeholder insights, featuring contributions from various health professionals.
This consultation represents a pivotal effort to enhance public health outcomes in India, with expert inputs shaping national policies to tackle the nutritional challenges faced by the country’s diverse population.
