Women's Safety - The Need of the Hour
In today's time, the safety of women and children is under scrutiny. India, known as the land of gods and goddesses, where great social reformers were born, raised their voices against social evils like child marriage, polygamy, and the Sati system. Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji proclaimed, "Why call her bad, from whom kings are born?" But it seems the modern world has forgotten the teachings of Baba Nanak.
Today, crimes against women are rapidly increasing in our India. Even in this developed age, India remains a male-dominated country. Women still suffer from various forms of violence and abuse. This can happen at any time and place, whether it be their own home, a public place, or their workplace. Since ancient times, women have been considered objects of pleasure. They have always been victims of insult, exploitation, and oppression by men. Nowadays, rape and the brutal murder of women, girls, and innocent daughters have become common occurrences. We try to forget one heinous incident only for another, even more horrific one, to occur. Such despicable acts are happening daily, but some incidents spread like wildfire across the nation through media, leading to protests, strikes, vandalism, and candle marches, becoming major issues. The latest case involves a brilliant senior resident doctor in Kolkata, who was raped and murdered at R.G. Kar Medical College. This incident has shamed humanity as it crossed all boundaries of brutality. This girl's middle-class family struggled immensely to make her a doctor, but all their dreams were shattered in an instant. She was the only child of her parents. She succeeded in both JEE and medical exams, but chose the medical field and got admitted to J.M.M. Medical College, Kalyani. Who knows what future she and her family envisioned? As a successful doctor, she would have provided a healthy life to many patients, but the vile mentality of the culprits destroyed everything. The ratio of educated doctors to the population in our country is well known. The murder of a doctor is truly the murder of humanity. In India, rape is the fourth most common crime against women. According to the National Crime Records Bureau's 2021 annual report, 31,677 rape cases were registered across the country, with an average of 86 cases reported daily. Even today, such news appears on every page of the newspaper. These are the cases that come to light, but the number of suppressed cases is much higher. The 1992 incident in Ajmer, where more than 100 schoolgirls were sexually exploited, made headlines. On December 16, 2020, a 23-year-old student was gang-raped, and later subjected to inhuman treatment. She died 13 days later. This incident shook the entire nation and Parliament, leading to the eventual hanging of the culprits. Such incidents show no sign of stopping. Acid attacks, chain, purse, and mobile phone snatching have become common occurrences today, but all these crimes are a shameful blot on a civilized society. There is a need to change our mindset. The justice system should be strict, transparent, and swift. Punishments should set an example for those with a brutal mindset and instill fear in their hearts. This is the need of the hour.
