
Dr Ganda Singh Memorial Lecture: Discussion on Sufi poetry in the context of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar
Patiala, February 20- Eminent historian Dr Surinder Singh said that Sufi poetry has contributed significantly in inculcating high values ??in man. He was expressing his views during the 'Dr Ganda Singh Memorial Lecture' organized by the Department of History and Punjab Historical Studies, Punjabi University.

Speaking during this lecture held in the Senate Hall of the University, he explained in detail the development of Sufism in the thirteenth century on the basis of the works of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. Professor Surinder Singh in his lecture explored the complex spiritual landscape of the thirteenth century, focusing particularly on the profound contribution of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, an important and influential figure in Punjabi mysticism.
It is noteworthy that Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, a contemporary of Sheikh Farid, lived mainly in the region of Multan, a historical center of cultural and spiritual exchange. Dr Singh said that in his lifetime he wrote a total of 42 ghazals. He said that the essence of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar’s ghazals revolved around the central theme of the true existence of God. Professor Surinder Singh emphasised on the nuanced approach adopted by Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in his compositions, especially in the interpretation of the Quran.
Dr Sandeep Kaur, Head, Department of History and Punjab Historical Studies expressed her views on the ‘Dr Ganda Singh Memorial Lecture Series’ and introduced the topic. She said that this lecture series would continue in future as well.
