Kolkata, September 3: The West Bengal Legislative Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed the state's anti-rape bill with the full support of the opposition.
However, the House did not approve the amendments proposed by the Leader of the Opposition Shuvendu Adhikari in the bill.
In this bill, there is a provision that in case the victim dies due to the incident of rape or she goes into a state of permanent unconsciousness, the accused can be sentenced to death if found guilty.
The bill titled 'Aparajita Mahila and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Law and Amendment) Bill 2024' also provides for life imprisonment without parole for the accused.
It is to be mentioned that this two-day special session of the Vidhan Sabha was called on Monday in view of the horrific incident of rape and murder of a female doctor in the government RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last month.
Mamata demanded the resignation of Modi and Shah
Presenting the bill in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister of the state, Mamata Banerjee, said that the purpose of this bill is to give speedy investigation and ensure more punishment to the accused. On this occasion, he also demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and the Chief Ministers of all such states for 'failing to implement effective legal arrangements for the protection of women'.
