Chandigarh: Doctors at Max Hospital, Mohali, emphasized the importance of timely treatment and continuous awareness in the fight against TB, while highlighting the significance of early diagnosis.
Dr. Kapil Kumar, Consultant in Pulmonology at Max Hospital, Mohali, stated, "TB is one of the most significant infectious diseases globally and remains a major public health concern in India as well. TB is both preventable and curable; however, delayed diagnosis and incomplete treatment often lead to severe complications and increase the risk of transmission."
He further added that TB is an infection that primarily affects the lungs. Although it can be treated with antibiotics, it can become severe if not treated in a timely manner.
Speaking about the treatment of TB, Dr. Kapil noted that the primary treatment involves taking antibiotics for a period of at least six months.
He explained that if the TB infection has spread to the brain, the spinal cord, or the area surrounding the heart, the patient may also require a course of steroid medication for a few weeks.
Dr. Kapil issued a warning that discontinuing treatment on one's own is extremely dangerous. Patients should stop taking their medication only upon the advice of a doctor.
