Mohali: A 32-year-old woman from Tarn Taran gave birth to a healthy baby at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, after overcoming severe kidney disease, dialysis, and a kidney transplant.
Rupinder Kaur was diagnosed with kidney failure due to hypertension in 2022; the condition eventually affected both her kidneys, leaving her dependent on dialysis. The illness not only impacted her health but also made her feel that her dream of starting a family might never be realized.
Seeking the best possible treatment and hoping for a normal life, she visited Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali. There, she was advised that pregnancy could be possible even after a kidney transplant, provided there was appropriate treatment, close monitoring, and careful planning. Encouraged by this guidance, she underwent a successful kidney transplant at the age of 28 under the supervision of Dr. Munish Chauhan, Director of Nephrology.
Post-transplant, she was advised to wait three years before planning a pregnancy to allow her kidney function to stabilize and to ensure the safest possible outcome for both mother and child. Through regular follow-ups and careful management of her post-transplant health, her condition steadily improved.
During her pregnancy, she was treated at Max Hospital under the supervision of Dr. Seema Wadhwa, Director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Close monitoring was maintained throughout to minimize potential complications and ensure a safe pregnancy. She was hospitalized in the 34th week of pregnancy due to reduced fetal movement. Her pregnancy was complicated by chronic hypertension and intrahepatic cholestasis. As her condition progressed towards a risk of pregnancy-induced seizures, Dr. Seema Wadhwa delivered the baby via an emergency Caesarean section. Kaur gave birth to a healthy baby girl weighing 2.3 kg. Both mother and child recovered well and were discharged in stable condition after a week.
