Karnal, April 17- Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini stated that ward committees will act as a strong link between the administration and the public, playing a pivotal role in transforming the sanitation drive into a mass movement. While virtually addressing ward committees across the state, he called for ensuring maximum participation from the people. The Chief Minister remarked that the Haryana government is working in "mission mode" to realize Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a 'Swachh Bharat' (Clean India) and 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India).
Through the Urban Local Bodies Department, approximately 1,520 ward committees have already been constituted within Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils, and Municipalities, while the formation process in the remaining areas is set to be completed shortly. He appealed to the committee members to play an active role in keeping their respective wards clean and to raise public awareness regarding sanitation.
He announced that a special sanitation drive will be conducted from May 1 to May 15, during which ensuring the participation of the general public is essential. The Chief Minister emphasized that neglecting sanitation has a direct impact on society; therefore, every member must fulfill their responsibility.
He urged ward committees to act as a bridge between the administration and citizens, prioritizing the forwarding of sanitation-related complaints to officials to ensure their prompt resolution. In this regard, discussions were held regarding the issuance of a state-level toll-free number to facilitate the submission of suggestions to the government.
He clarified that the Municipal Councilor of the respective ward would serve as the Chairperson of the committee, while the concerned official would assist in the capacity of Secretary. Furthermore, efforts should be made to encourage people not to litter indiscriminately, to utilize the door-to-door waste collection service, and to segregate wet and dry waste.
Emphasis was also placed on enhancing awareness through street plays (Nukkad Nataks).
The Chief Minister directed officials to closely monitor the functioning of agencies responsible for waste disposal and to take appropriate action in the event of any negligence. He stated that the committees should also assist in ensuring that the benefits of government schemes reach eligible beneficiaries.
He explained that the objective of the ward committees is to prioritize local needs, formulate proposals for development works, assist in solid waste management, foster social harmony, aid in revenue collection, and ensure the maintenance of amenities such as parks, roads, and streetlights. Furthermore, emphasis was placed on playing an active role in healthcare services, vaccination drives, and environmental conservation.
