Patiala: During a training session on Disaster Management, First Aid, CPR, and Civil Defense for over 125 jail personnel, retired Red Cross Training Supervisor and Government of India Disaster Management/First Aid Trainer, Sh. Kaka Ram Verma, conducted practical exercises to boost the confidence and morale of the trainees.
Appreciating the session, DSP-cum-Vice Principal of the Punjab Jail Training School, Sh. Mukesh Sharma, stated that the United Nations has warned that in the face of impending natural, climatic, human-made disasters, wars, and domestic emergencies, it is not enough to just give lectures to students, teachers, police, staff, and volunteers. Instead, practical exercises and mock drills should be conducted. He emphasized that observation alone does not prepare a person to rescue victims, use fire safety equipment, or perform CPR. It is essential to instill the capability, empathy, and practical skills in the hearts, minds, and hands of every individual to save precious lives.
Sh. Kaka Ram Verma, who has been providing such training since 1980, expressed his gratitude and explained that rather than relying on lectures or videos, he encourages trainees to learn through hands-on practice. This includes managing cardiac arrest, fractures, bleeding, choking, fire, and gas accidents, as well as rescue operations using locally available materials and makeshift stretchers.
He stressed that only those trained through regular practice, confidence-building, and expert-led mock drills—conducted two to three times a year—will be able to protect themselves and save others. He appealed to everyone to utilize their time, resources, and sense of duty to ensure the security of their families, organizations, and society.
