Chandigarh:- In the results of the general elections to 103 local bodies (municipal corporations and city councils) of Punjab being announced today, the state's ruling Aam Aadmi Party has taken steps towards a one-sided historic victory by badly outstripping its opponents in a multi-cornered contest. In these 'mini assembly' elections, the AAP has so far captured more than 33 percent of the total wards.
According to official data received till 3 pm, the counting of votes for a total of 1,349 wards of the state has been completed, which has made it clear that a sweeping public mandate has come in favor of the government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.

The biggest and record-breaking result in this election battle has come from Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann's own assembly constituency Dhuri. The Aam Aadmi Party has swept 20 seats out of the total 21 wards of Dhuri Municipal Council, almost wiping out the opposition parties.

A total of 115 counting centres have been set up by the Election Commission in 23 districts of Punjab, outside which multi-layered security has been deployed. Around 80 candidates have already been elected unopposed during the election process. Voting for eight municipal corporations, 75 municipal councils and 19 nagar panchayats in the state was held on May 26.
According to the details, the political fate of 1,613 candidates for eight municipal corporations, 5,141 for 75 municipal councils and 800 candidates for 19 nagar panchayats will be decided. Today, 1,897 wards across Punjab will get new councilors. During the AAP tenure, earlier, five municipal corporations and 41 municipal councils/nagar panchayats were voted on in December 2024.
A total of 22,38,241 voters exercised their political right for urban bodies on May 26, which is about 64 percent polling rate. This is the first election of Barnala Municipal Corporation and 50 wards of Barnala will get councilors of the corporation for the first time.
