Chandigarh: A 36-year-old patient suffering from severe abdominal swelling and pain was given a new lease of life following a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure at Max Hospital, Mohali.
Dr. Anupam Goel, Principal Consultant – General, Gastro-intestinal, and Robotic Surgery at Max, stated that the keyhole surgery resulted in minimal post-operative pain and no wound-related complications, allowing the patient to recover quickly.
The patient had been brought to the Max Hospital emergency department complaining of severe abdominal swelling and pain, recurrent vomiting, and high fever. Examinations revealed a perforation in the upper part of the small intestine. If left untreated, such a condition can rapidly escalate into a severe infection and sepsis.
Under Dr. Goel's leadership, the medical team successfully performed a laparoscopic repair using the 'Modified Graham's Patch' technique. Instead of a large incision, small keyhole incisions were made, and the intestinal perforation was sealed using a small piece of the patient's own tissue to prevent further leakage. This technique avoided the need for a large surgical incision, facilitating a faster recovery.
Dr. Goel said, "This condition was a surgical emergency requiring immediate treatment. With advanced minimally invasive techniques, we are able to treat various complex abdominal emergencies with less pain, fewer complications, and quicker recovery compared to traditional open surgery."
The patient recovered well after the surgery and was discharged in stable condition following a seven-day observation period.
