Chandigarh:- The Punjab government under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has launched the "CM Flying Squad" with the aim of bringing about historic improvements in the road infrastructure of the state. Launched in October 2025, this initiative is part of a massive plan of ?16,209 crore to build 44,920 km of roads.
Its aim is to ensure transparency, quality and accountability in road construction. This step is considered important to overcome the problems arising due to poor roads in rural areas.
The main objective of setting up the CM Flying Squad is to ensure zero tolerance for negligence in road construction. The government has given clear instructions that if a road is found to be of poor quality or lacks timely maintenance, the contractor concerned will be immediately blacklisted.
In addition, every contractor is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the road for five years, which ensures long-term safety and durability. Some states, such as Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand, where road projects are often hampered by delays and poor quality, are looking at the Punjab model as an example.
This government-created flying squad, comprising senior officials from the Punjab Mandi Board and the Public Works Department, is conducting surprise inspections in various districts to check the quality of construction. It is particularly closely monitoring the ?3,425 crore Rural Link Road project.
Wherever shoddy construction is found, the contracts of the contractors are immediately cancelled. The rule of releasing payments only after the satisfaction of the panchayats is encouraging contractors to work responsibly.
Inspections conducted in seven districts so far have revealed significant improvements in road quality. The actions of the flying squad have sent a clear message to the contractors: failure to meet maintenance obligations will result in blacklisting. This has not only improved the quality of construction work but has also strengthened the rural economy. Better connectivity is directly benefiting farmers, traders and common citizens.
Finally, the CM Flying Squad is a symbol of the vision and strong will of the Punjab government. This initiative has set new standards of quality in road construction by making contractors fully accountable. Punjab is not only moving towards making its infrastructure world-class, but this stringent policy is also taking the development of the state to new heights. This initiative of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is definitely establishing Punjab as a leading state.
