Haroli/Una, July 7: A team of expert veterinarians at the Veterinary Hospital Polyclinic in Lalri successfully performed a complex surgery, giving a buffalo a new lease on life by removing 32 sharp iron nails, wire, a bearing ball, a broken bolt, and 10 other small metal fragments from its stomach. The surgery was conducted under the leadership of Veterinary Officer Dr. Nishant Ranaut. The expert team also included Dr. Navneet Sharma, Dr. Shilpa Ranaut, and Dr. Stephanie Pradhan.
Veterinary Officer Dr. Nishant Ranaut stated that Rampal, a livestock owner from Mehatpur, had brought his buffalo to the Lalri Veterinary Hospital Polyclinic after it had stopped eating fodder for about 10 days. Following an initial clinical examination, blood tests and an ultrasound were performed, confirming the presence of metallic foreign bodies in the buffalo's stomach.
Given the buffalo's critical condition, the owner was advised to proceed with immediate surgery. Subsequently, the team of expert veterinarians successfully operated on the animal, safely extracting 32 sharp iron nails and wire, a bearing ball, a broken bolt, and 10 other small metal pieces. According to the doctors, these metal objects posed a serious threat to the buffalo's health and were the primary cause of the pain and the animal's refusal to eat over an extended period.
Dr. Ranaut reported that the buffalo's condition is steadily improving following the surgery, and it has found relief from pain. He added that the buffalo would remain under medical observation for the next 7 to 10 days to continuously monitor its recovery process. He urged livestock owners to keep animal feed and the surrounding environment clean and safe, and to ensure that iron nails, wires, and other metal objects do not come into contact with the feed. He noted that such objects could inadvertently be ingested by the animals, leading to serious health issues.
If an animal exhibits symptoms such as a prolonged refusal to eat, pain, or abnormal behavior, it should be taken to the nearest veterinary hospital immediately for examination and treatment.
Pharmacists Saurav Kumar, Sunanda, Deepak, Karamveer, and Vikas also provided significant assistance in ensuring the success of this complex surgery.
