Mumbai, February 7:- India's richest municipal corporation Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation got a new mayor today. She became the first woman mayor of Mumbai. BJP corporator from Ghatkopar Ritu Tawde will now take charge of BMC. This is the first time in the last 25 years that the power of the municipal corporation has passed from the hands of the Thackeray family to the BJP. Earlier, Ritu Tawde had also served as the chairperson of the BMC's education committee.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena's Shankar Ghadi has been appointed deputy mayor. Shiv Sena has decided to make four of its corporators deputy mayors in turn. The names of the mayor and deputy mayor were announced today by BJP leader Amit Satnam and Shiv Sena's Rahul Shewale.
It is worth mentioning that in the 227-member BMC, the BJP has emerged as the single largest party by winning 89 seats, while the Shinde-led Shiv Sena has got 29 seats. The alliance has a total of 118 councillors, which is more than the majority figure of 114. On the other hand, Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena and Raj Thackeray's MNS had contested the elections together but could win only 65 seats. This has ended the dominance of the Thackeray family in the BMC and led to the rise of the BJP.
The richest municipal corporation in the country BMC is the richest municipal corporation in India, with a budget of Rs 74,427 crore for the financial year 2025-26. This is 14 percent more than the previous year. Improving Mumbai's urban infrastructure will be the biggest challenge for the new mayor, Ritu Tawde.
