KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee faced protests from locals during his visit to Sonarpur on Saturday. During the incident, some people allegedly manhandled and assaulted him. He had come to meet the family of a victim of post-poll violence.
Unidentified persons pelted stones, shoes and eggs at Abhishek Banerjee. It is alleged that some people also tried to physically attack him with kicks and punches. During the ruckus, the mob shouted slogans of "Chor, Chor" (thief, thief) against him. This is the first time that public anger has been openly expressed against a politician who was considered the centre of political power in West Bengal till just a month ago.
This was Abhishek Banerjee's first public event 25 days after the West Bengal assembly election results were declared. He visited Vivekanandanagar area in Ward No. 9 of Sonarpur Municipality and met the family of Sanju Karmakar, an alleged victim of the post-poll violence. His visit was announced on Friday night.
