Chandigarh, November 7: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has launched a scathing attack on the BJP-ruled Municipal Corporation, accusing it of misuse of power and undemocratic behaviour. The party said that what happened in the general house meeting held on September 30, 2025, was a direct attack on democratic traditions. This revelation came in the official reply that was recently received by Leader of Opposition Jaswinder Kaur.
Jaswinder Kaur had written an official letter to the Municipal Corporation Secretary on October 8, 2025, seeking information about the number of marshals deployed during that controversial meeting, their appointment and authority.
In a written reply received on November 4, 2025, the Municipal Corporation confirmed that a total of 27 marshals were deployed inside the House — out of which 10 were appointed by the Secretary and 17 directly by the Mayor.
Jaswinder Kaur said, “The official reply is even more shocking — 27 marshals were deployed to remove just 10 Aam Aadmi Party councillors from the House. This clearly shows that the BJP misused its power and tried to suppress democratic discourse by force.”
The AAP councillors who were forcibly removed from the House included Jaswinder Kaur, Yogesh Dhingra, Damanpreet Singh, Ramchandra Yadav, Prem Lata and other opposition members who were opposing the Manimajra land resolution. Eyewitness accounts and video footage showed scenes of intense clashes and chaos inside the House.
The Aam Aadmi Party said the revelations prove that the BJP resorted to coercion to suppress the voice of opposition and get the controversial Manimajra land sale agenda passed.
Vijaypal Singh, President, Aam Aadmi Party Chandigarh said, “In the earlier statements of BJP Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla, it was said that the Manimajra land is about 6.9 acres. But in the later reports, this area has been stated to be between 12 to 19 acres, which points to manipulation in the size and value of the land. The BJP seems desperate to sell this government land at all costs in the name of ‘development’.”
The Aam Aadmi Party Chandigarh termed it a pre-planned conspiracy and said that it was the darkest day in the history of the Municipal Corporation, when force was used inside the house to silence the opposition councilors.
The party demanded that a transparent re-evaluation and audit of the Manimajra land area and the sale process be done.
Jaswinder Kaur said, “The BJP’s style of governance has been exposed once again — secrecy, abuse of power and manipulation of facts. The people of Chandigarh will not allow their land to be sold under deception and pressure.”
Aam Aadmi Party Chandigarh said it will continue its struggle both inside and outside the House for transparency, accountability and protection of government land.
