Karnal, July 23: A no-confidence motion brought against Karnal Zila Parishad Chairperson Pravesh Rana was passed with a massive majority on Thursday. Out of the 19 councilors who participated in the floor test, 17 voted against her, while only two voted in her favor. Consequently, Pravesh Rana was removed from the post of Chairperson. Until a new Chairperson is elected, Vice-Chairperson Reena Kumari will assume the responsibilities of the acting Chairperson.
The councilors stated that the process of moving the no-confidence motion against the Chairperson had begun about six to seven months ago. They alleged that the expected development work was not carried out in most wards during her three-and-a-half-year tenure.
Despite raising issues repeatedly through meetings and other channels, no solutions were found, leading to growing resentment among the public. Councilor Vinod Kashyap alleged discrimination in the distribution of grants; this caused most councilors to become dissatisfied with the Chairperson, prompting the decision to move the no-confidence motion.
Zila Parishad CEO Amit Kumar confirmed that the Vice-Chairperson would serve as the acting Chairperson until a new Chairperson is elected. Meanwhile, Reena Kumari's husband, Dheeraj Kharkali, stated that development work would be carried out equitably with the cooperation of all councilors, and equal priority would be given to all areas.
