Chandigarh, October 23- A one-day seminar on 'Challenges facing democracy and the Indian judiciary' was conducted by the Chandigarh unit of the All India Lawyers Union under the chairmanship of in-charge North Zone Mr. Gurmej Singh, national leader of the union. On this occasion, prominent thinker Dr. Dear Lal Garg, Vice President of District Bar Association Chandigarh Mr. Rajat Bakhshi, Library Secretary Mr. Gurdev Singh, Union President of Chandigarh Karam Singh Vakil and Secretary Muhammad Shahnaz Gorsi specially participated.
On this occasion Dr. Dear Lal Garg said that according to the Constitution of India, the government formed by the people has become the mother & father of its own birth-giver countrymen instead of being a public servant. The right to dialogue, to listen to and accept different views, to respect opposition, to give the right to protest and debate and to refuse when disagreeing is being taken away from the citizens, which is tantamount to murdering democracy. He said that when 45 percent of the country's leaders have a criminal background, the general public has no hope from the lawyers and the judiciary, and the Indian judiciary has forced the state governments and the central government to overturn pro-people decisions in many cases.
Mr. Gurmej Singh said that the government violated human rights by imposing emergency in the country from 1975 to 1977. All India Lawyers Union was established in 1982 and we struggled on many issues. He said that today again Indians have to fight for their existence. Mr. Gurdev Singh said that the topic of the seminar is suitable according to the current conditions of the country.
