World Thyroid Day Timely Thyroid Screening Prevents LongTerm Complications Experts

Chandigarh: "The thyroid gland plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, energy levels, heart function, body temperature, mood, and hormonal balance. Disorders such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroid nodules, and autoimmune thyroid diseases—if left untreated—can have severe repercussions on both physical and mental health."
Speaking on Monday on the occasion of World Thyroid Day, Dr. Akanksha Gautam, Consultant Endocrinologist at Livasa Hospital, Mohali, noted that many people tend to overlook early symptoms such as unexplained weight changes, fatigue, hair loss, irregular menstruation, anxiety, sleep disturbances, swelling in the neck, or difficulty concentrating.
These symptoms should not be ignored, as timely thyroid screening can help prevent long-term complications, she pointed out.
Dr. Akanksha further emphasized that women—particularly during pregnancy, the postpartum period, and menopause—are at a higher risk of developing thyroid imbalances. Individuals with diabetes, obesity, autoimmune disorders, or a family history of thyroid disease should undergo regular hormonal check-ups and thyroid profile tests as part of their preventive healthcare regimen.
She advised adopting a healthy lifestyle, which includes balanced nutrition, regular exercise, stress management, adequate sleep, and avoiding self-medication. She also cautioned against ignoring persistent symptoms and encouraged people to seek expert medical consultation rather than relying on unverified information available online.
