Veterinary University organizes animal judging competition for students

Ludhiana, September 12, 2026:- Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana organised an ‘Animal Judging Competition’ with the objective of training young veterinary doctors in the art and science of animal judging and highlighting its importance in animal selection and breed improvement.
The competition witnessed an overwhelming response, with 19 teams participating and a total of 57 undergraduate and postgraduate students taking part. Each team evaluated Murrah buffaloes, Nili-Ravi buffaloes and Holstein Friesian (HF) cattle. Breed-specific scorecards were used for this purpose, which were prepared on the basis of suggestions received during a brainstorming session. These scorecards included breed-specific characteristics and judging criteria, helping the participants systematically evaluate and score the animals. This practical exercise provided students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge of breed characteristics and animal conformation, while also helping them develop their skills in observation, comparative evaluation and decision-making.
Dr. Jatinder Pal Singh Gill, Vice-Chancellor, appreciated the efforts of the organising team and said that this step towards creating a team of skilled animal judging experts could prove highly beneficial in selecting high-potential animals and contributing to breed improvement.
Dr. Ravinder Singh Grewal, Director of Extension Education, said that animal judging plays an important role in identifying animals possessing desirable traits for breeding and production purposes. He stressed that such competitions provide students with practical experience in animal evaluation and help them develop the ability to make correct decisions, thereby contributing to the genetic selection and improvement of animal breeds.
The competition provided students with valuable practical experience beyond classroom learning and encouraged a spirit of healthy competition and professional skill development. The programme was conducted under the supervision of a dedicated team of teachers who coordinated the arrangements for its smooth conduct.
The winning teams will be felicitated by the university during the Livestock Fair to be organised on 18-19 September, 2026.
