His decisive high-level review of the Indus River System has decisively shattered every long-standing myth, every politically motivated narrative and every defeatist mentality that claimed that India was helpless due to so-called logistical geographical or international limitations.
Grewal pointed out that for decades, doubters outside and within our country chose to count only the obstacles and hesitations. They seriously underestimated the iron will of the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi-led government, which has repeatedly turned the impossible into reality with courage, clarity and determination. The Chenab Jhelum and Indus rivers, which originate in Jammu and Kashmir, for years sustained Pakistan’s agricultural economy, its drinking water needs and hydroelectric aspirations, under an arrangement that was deeply unfair to India and mentally diminished our rightful share as a highly riparian nation.
He further said that after the Pakistan-sponsored terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 22 April 2025, which brutally claimed innocent lives, India responded with moral strength and principled determination by suspending the Indus Waters Treaty on 23 April 2025. This historic decision was not an act of revenge but an act of justice rooted in national interest and human dignity. As the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has said with unprecedented clarity that blood and water cannot flow together and not a single drop of Indian water will be allowed to flow at the cost of Indian lives.
Indian Security and Indian Needs. Grewal said that the comprehensive review conducted by the highest levels of the Government of India under the leadership of Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, including the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Ministry of Power, shows that this is not just rhetoric, but a carefully planned national mission. Short-term, medium-term and long-term strategies to store and harness India's waters for Indians are now being implemented with precision and purpose.
Canal networks, strategic tunnels, hydroelectric projects, irrigation expansion and integrated national water planning are no longer distant promises but are becoming living realities on the ground. He stressed that this historic step sends a powerful and emphatic message to Pakistan and the international community that decades-old imbalances and injustices are being redressed with resolved responsibility and respect for international norms, while India's national interests are being firmly protected.
