Ludhiana 08 July 2026:- Clean water is very important for good health. Water for drinking, brushing teeth, washing hands, bathing and cooking should be free from chemicals and harmful germs, otherwise water causes major diseases for us through parasites. Many water-borne diseases like jaundice, diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, hepatitis and food poisoning are such diseases that are caused by the use of dirty and contaminated water.
This information regarding these diseases that occur during the rainy season was shared by Dr. Jasbir Singh Bedi, Director, Center for One Health, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana. The problem of these diseases increases a lot during the rainy season, because the mixing of dirty water in drinking water is a major cause. These diseases caused by parasites, bacteria and viruses make humans sick.
These pathogens affect the human intestines, because the disease-causing microorganisms reach the human body directly through contaminated water. He said that according to the data of the World Health Organization, cholera and diarrheal diseases are the leading causes of death of children under five years of age in the world. Most of these deaths are due to contaminated water, poor sanitation conditions and poor drainage of wastewater. Children in developing countries are the most affected.
Experts from the Center for One Health Department of the Veterinary University said that during the rainy season, diseases spread due to waterlogging, non-drainage of sewage and mixing of contaminated water with drinking water. Apart from this, stagnant water breeds more mosquitoes and diseases like dengue and malaria are spread through mosquitoes. Citizens should not allow water to accumulate near their places of residence and should also keep the water drainage channels clean.
Water storage tanks and containers should also be kept clean because many germs accumulate in them. These tanks should be disinfected properly twice a year and the water should also be tested. Water filters used in homes should also be of good quality and it is very important to clean them from time to time.
If there is any doubt about the quality of water, it should be tested by a reliable laboratory, such a facility is also available at the Center for One Health of the Veterinary University. With a clean supply of water and by adopting healthy habits, we can avoid many diseases.
