Jammu:- The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was closed for more than two days due to heavy snowfall. Traffic was partially restored on this highway on Sunday. Fresh snowfall occurred in some parts of Kashmir including Srinagar this morning, which hampered snow removal work on the highway.
A traffic police official said, “The Jammu-Srinagar highway has been partially restored. Vehicles stuck between the Nashri and Navayug tunnels are being cleared first. Heavy snowfall has been witnessed here since Friday, due to which hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the 270-km-long highway due to road closures.
The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed for the third day in the morning today due to heavy snowfall in the area and bad weather. Repair work is underway to open other closed roads on this road. A large number of people have been stranded on the road due to heavy snowfall here and several vehicles have been damaged due to increased slippery conditions on the roads. The Meteorological Department has advised tourists to avoid taking to the roads during this snowfall.
According to information, the road has been temporarily opened for tourists going to Patnitop but police officials are checking their hotel bookings before allowing tourists to go to Patnitop. Officials said that apart from the road leading to Srinagar, the Doda-Kishtwar road is also closed. Temperatures have reached sub-zero temperatures at many places here.
All essential services including power and water supply are disrupted at many places. Popular tourist destinations of Jammu like Patnitop, Nathatop, Sanasar and Batot, Banihal, Gul and other places received snowfall, due to which normal life in these areas came to a standstill. Batot, Banihal, Gul, Ukhral and Rajgarh remained disconnected from the Ramban district headquarters.
