Karnal: The Revenue and Disaster Management Department and the NDRF conducted a mock drill on an ammonia gas leak, controlling a gas leak from a tanker carrying ammonia gas. During the mock drill, a report was made to the Dial 112 emergency number about the gas leak from the tanker. Upon receiving the information, Dial 112 informed the relevant departments, including the Disaster Management Department, Police Department, Health Department, and NDRF.
The response time of the relevant departments was nearly perfect. The police department sealed off the affected area, while the NDRF and Fire Brigade evacuated the injured, and the Health Department provided first aid and transported them to hospitals.
NDRF Assistant Commandant Anil Ranwa stated that the mock drill was very successful. Mock drills are conducted to identify and correct deficiencies. In such chemical accidents, an action plan is more important than response time. Rescue teams must have a foolproof action plan, otherwise they could be affected.
He stated that some shortcomings were revealed during this mock drill, such as the fire department's lack of SEBA masks and water curtains. These equipment are crucial for chemical accidents, as chemical accidents can cause eye irritation, breathing difficulties, and physical chemical reactions.
In such accidents, rescue teams must proceed with utmost caution and complete equipment. Furthermore, they must be fully aware of wind direction, the amount of chemicals present, the speed of leaks or other hazards, and the surrounding area.
DRO Manish Yadav thanked NDRF Assistant Commander Anil Ranwa and the NDRF Rohtak team, stating that this mock drill was possible with the support of the NDRF. Through this mock drill, various departments have learned how to carry out relief and rescue operations during chemical accidents.
Our department will also purchase the equipment used during such accidents. All necessary requirements will be met so that in case of such an accident in the future, rescue operations can be carried out quickly and effectively.
A team of 30 personnel from NDRF Rohtak participated in the mock drill and set up an NDRF store, communication post, command post and medical post at the site. They appealed to the general public not to panic during such accidents and to follow the instructions issued by the administration.
