Garhshankar:- Progressive farmer S. Surjit Singh Bimb, son of S. Watan Singh, a resident of village Birampur, after retiring in 2015 from Union Bank of India as Deputy General Manager, Regional Office Ludhiana, adopted organic farming and established “Bimb Natural Farm” in village Birampur, committing himself to chemical-free agriculture.
This farmer started organic farming on his 15 acres of land. Having completed an M.Sc. in Crop Science from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, he cultivates sugarcane on 9 acres using the bed planting technique and practices intercropping with potato, peas, turmeric, carrot, garlic, onion, and rajma. By incorporating the residue of these intercrops back into the soil, he maintains soil fertility and nutrient levels.
Additionally, he cultivates wheat naturally on 2 acres. By producing jaggery from sugarcane and selling it directly to customers, along with selling flour made from indigenous wheat varieties, he presents an example of self-marketing. In one kanal area, he has set up a polyhouse where he grows capsicum, brinjal, and cucumber using protected cultivation techniques.
To reach customers, Surjit Singh also uses social media platforms. Being continuously associated with Punjab Agricultural University, he has also obtained membership in the Organic Farmers Club. For nutrient management, he uses farmyard manure, and from his agricultural produce, he earns approximately ?15 lakh annually.
For adopting organic farming with the objective of environmental protection and human health, leading farmer S. Surjit Singh Bimb was honored with the CRI Pumps Award at the 2026 Kisan Mela. Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, played a key role in conferring this award, which was presented by Punjab Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann on 21-03-2026.
