SAS Nagar, June 24:- The Municipal Corporation carried out a major anti-encroachment drive in the nearby village of Sohana, demolishing around 18 illegal structures built on the village pond land. The action was taken on the land located behind the village girls’ school.
Social worker and representative of Councillor Sharanjit Kaur, Rupinder Singh Rupa Sohana, supervised the operation along with the municipal team. Municipal Councillor Harjit Singh Bhola was also present at the site.
Rupinder Singh Rupa said that nearly three acres of village common land, which originally contained a pond, had been illegally occupied over the years. Several permanent structures had been built, electricity connections had been obtained, and some occupants had even started running paying guest accommodations on the encroached land.
He said that following repeated demands from villagers, the Municipal Corporation initiated the demolition drive and succeeded in reclaiming nearly one and a half killa of land. Action to remove the remaining encroachments is also underway.
He further stated that all illegal encroachments on the village common land would be removed and the drive would continue in the coming days. At the time of filing the report, the demolition operation by the municipal authorities was still in progress.
