Sangrur, September 06:- As part of the campaign initiated to curb paddy stubble burning, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur, under Punjab Agricultural University, organized a one-day farmer awareness camp at village Phumman Singh Wala in Bhawanigarh block. Around 70 farmers, including village Sarpanch S. Sukhchain Singh, attended the program.
On this occasion, Dr. Mandeep Singh, In-charge, PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur, sensitized farmers about the adverse effects of burning paddy stubble on the environment, soil health, and human wellbeing. He informed that burning one ton of paddy stubble leads to the loss of 5.5 kg of nitrogen, 2.3 kg of phosphorus, 25 kg of potash, and 1.2 kg of sulfur nutrients. Furthermore, harmful gases released during stubble burning pollute the atmosphere and cause health issues in humans. 
He strongly urged farmers to adopt in-situ crop residue management techniques instead of burning stubble, highlighting the benefits to soil health. He explained that incorporating paddy stubble into the soil increases organic carbon content, enhancing soil fertility, lowering chemical fertilizer costs, and increasing crop yields. Additionally, he shared information about the new wheat variety PBW 887 and invited farmers to participate actively in the upcoming PAU Kisan Melas in September.
Dr. Rukinderpreet Singh, Assistant Professor (Agronomy), provided insights on machinery used for sowing wheat while managing stubble in the field. He elaborated on weed control and nutrient management in wheat sown with stubble incorporation. He also advised farmers on the benefits of spraying potassium nitrate (13:0:45) on paddy, recommending a 1.5% spray (3 kg potassium nitrate in 200 liters of water per acre) at the boot stage.
Dr. Ravinder Kaur, Associate Professor (Horticulture), encouraged farmers to cultivate winter nutrition gardens. She shared information on various vegetable varieties developed by Punjab Agricultural University and highlighted the vegetable nursery seedlings prepared by KVK Sangrur for farmers.
At the conclusion of the camp, farmers' queries were addressed, and winter vegetable seed kits prepared by the university along with agricultural literature were distributed. Village Sarpanch S. Sukhchain Singh and the Farmers' Union President expressed heartfelt gratitude to the KVK Sangrur team.
