Hansi: Various social and economic surveys are being conducted across the country by the Field Operations Division (FOD) of the National Statistical Office (NSO), operating under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India. The objective of these surveys is to collect vital data from households, enterprises, and other institutions to create a robust statistical foundation for formulating development plans and policies at the national and state levels.
DC Rahul Narwal stated that the NSO has been continuously compiling data related to the country's socio-economic development since 1950. Over this period, the office has developed a comprehensive and reliable database through various National Sample Surveys, which provides significant assistance to central and state governments in framing public welfare schemes, programs, and development policies.
He mentioned that trained NSO officers conduct survey work using modern technology. For this purpose, officers have been provided with handheld digital devices (tablets) equipped with e-Sigma software, while secure web portals are used for enterprise surveys. Information is collected by visiting selected families, villages, urban blocks, and enterprises based on scientific sampling methods.
During household surveys, information is obtained from the head of the family or a knowledgeable member, while in enterprise-related surveys, information is provided by authorized representatives or the owners of the enterprise. All surveys are conducted in accordance with prescribed standards and procedures to ensure that the data obtained is accurate and reliable.
DC Rahul Narwal clarified that all information obtained during the survey is kept strictly confidential. The identity of any family, individual, or establishment is not disclosed in reports or published data. The collected data is used solely for statistical and policy purposes and is not used for any other objective.
He informed that during June 2026, various surveys are being conducted by NSO (FOD) in several districts. Additionally, notices have been issued to selected units for the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), Consumer Price Index (CPI), Index of Industrial Production (IIP), and the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE). NSO officers contact these units from time to time to compile the necessary data.
Furthermore, data is also being collected from selected cooperative societies under the Quick Survey of Functioning Cooperative Societies (April-September 2026). For this task, NSO officers will establish contact with the relevant societies and institutions to obtain the necessary information.
The DC has appealed to all selected families, enterprises, institutions, and cooperative societies to provide full cooperation to NSO officers in the survey work and to provide true, accurate, and complete information. Data obtained through the active participation of citizens and institutions plays a vital role in the country's development, better policy-making, and the effective implementation of public welfare schemes. He stated that the cooperation of every citizen will prove helpful in further strengthening the process of nation-building and will help in effectively delivering the benefits of development schemes to all sections of society.
