CARACAS:- China has demanded that the US immediately release Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. Both are currently in US custody. The US military captured them in the Venezuelan capital Caracas and took them to the US.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that taking the president to their country in this way is wrong and the issue should be resolved through dialogue. China had earlier reacted strongly to the US action.
North Korea called the US action in Venezuela a hooliganism. The North Korean Foreign Ministry said that this US action is the most serious attack on the independence and sovereignty of any country.
US forces invaded Venezuela on the night of January 2 and kidnapped President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores. They were later brought to New York, where they are being held in a detention center. They will be tried on weapons and drug-related charges.
