Chandigarh (Balwinder Singh):- A visual presentation of the book ‘Tere Bina’ by renowned ghazal writer Kulwinder Phull, along with an honour ceremony and a poetry gathering, was organised at the beautiful Meadows branch of the Edmonton Public Library on 17 Street in Edmonton, Canada. The event was presided over by Kulwinder Phull, Dalbir Singh Riar and Surjit Kaur Dhaliwal. Jasbir Deol, MLA; Raj Uppal, president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees Alberta; and emerging songwriter and columnist Deepa Bandala attended as chief guests.

Balwinder Balam, Dalbir Singh Riar and Amritpal Singh welcomed everyone, highlighted the organisation’s achievements and expressed their gratitude. On this occasion, Jasbir Deol and Raj Uppal shared their views on personal matters and the prevailing situation in Canada. Ghazal writer Kulwinder Phull spoke about his lifestyle and the creative aspects of his book.

While discussing Kulwinder Phull’s book ‘Tere Bina’, Balwinder Balam said that Kulwinder Phull was a mature ghazal writer and a disciple of the late Janab Deepak Jaitoi Sahib. He said that great care had been taken in his ghazals with regard to rukn, arkan, avurdh, avardhak, sakin, mutaharrik, as well as metre, rhythm and language. Although shorter metres had been used, the couplets conveyed freshness and a flowing, melodious quality like a running stream. The book contains a total of 112 ghazals.

As readers go through his ghazals, some couplets become deeply embedded in the mind. Let us share a few of them:

“Clouds of grace will gradually shower their blessings,

The roads will slowly fill up like oceans.”

And:

“Fresh air will always arrive, my friends,

If we open a window in our minds.”

And:

“Every day, it must be worshipped,

For we have kneaded clay with our own hands to create an idol.”

And:

“Those harsh words in songs

Are little packets of poison.”

And:

“When women wear jewellery and adorn themselves,

Life becomes a new, delicate sense of modesty.”

Kulwinder Phull has written couplets on material realities, romanticism and every aspect of life.

On the occasion, Kulwinder Phull, Jasbir Deol, MLA, and Raj Uppal were honoured with shawls bearing Gurmukhi inscriptions.
