Hansi: – Hansi Superintendent of Police (SP) Vinod Kumar has issued a detailed cyber advisory, urging district residents to remain vigilant against cybercrimes. He noted that cybercriminals are constantly devising new methods to defraud people. They often contact individuals by posing as bank officials, customer care representatives, electricity department employees, insurance agents, or officials from gas agencies, FASTag services, e-commerce companies, or government departments. Alternatively, they lure victims into their traps with promises of providing online services, updating KYC details, securing refunds, claiming prizes, or resolving complaints.
He explained that cyber fraudsters frequently send fake links via WhatsApp, SMS, email, or social media, or ask users to download specific mobile apps. Once a person clicks the link or installs the app, the fraudsters gain access to sensitive mobile and banking information, subsequently carrying out unauthorized transactions and causing financial loss.
SP Vinod Kumar pointed out that people often call fake customer care numbers found on the internet. Cybercriminals, posing as company employees, trick victims into downloading screen-sharing apps or extracting banking details to withdraw funds from their accounts. Therefore, one should obtain customer care numbers for any company, bank, or organization solely from their official websites or official mobile applications.
He advised that if anyone receives a suspicious link via phone, message, email, or social media, or if an unknown person asks for banking details, they should not trust it at all. Banks, the RBI, and government institutions never ask for OTPs, UPI PINs, CVVs, ATM card numbers, net banking passwords, or other confidential information over the phone.
