Hoshiarpur/Garhshankar, July 16:- Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Legislative Assembly, S. Jai Krishan Singh Rouri, stated that the Punjab Government led by Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann considers education not as a business, but as the right of every child. Implementing this vision, the Punjab Government has placed a strict curb on the arbitrary fee hikes imposed by private schools. Now, no private school in the state will be able to increase fees by more than 5% without adhering to the rules.
Deputy Speaker Rouri mentioned that the "Punjab Regulation of Fee of Un-aided Educational Institutions (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026" has been approved by the Governor. The implementation of this ordinance will provide major relief to lakhs of parents in the state and effectively stop the arbitrary fee hikes by private schools.
He said that for the past several years, parents have been under financial pressure due to rising fees in private schools. Due to the annual arbitrary increases, it was becoming difficult for common and middle-class families to bear the cost of their children's education. Taking this legitimate demand of the people seriously, the Punjab Government has taken this historic decision.
Rouri stated that this law will further strengthen transparency and accountability in the education sector. Now, schools will not be able to increase fees at their will, and every decision will have to be taken within the scope of the prescribed rules. This will protect the rights of parents and prevent undue financial burden on children's education.
He said that the government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is prioritizing education, health, and public welfare. The government's objective is to provide quality education to children of every section and to eliminate any form of arbitrariness in the field of education.
The Deputy Speaker said that the Aam Aadmi Party government has made several historic reforms in the education sector since assuming power. The infrastructure of government schools has been strengthened, 'Schools of Eminence' have been started, and now, by bringing private school fees under regulatory rules, relief has been provided to lakhs of families.
He stated that the Punjab government is committed to fulfilling every promise made to the people, and such decisions related to public interest will continue to be taken in the future as well. He added that this ordinance will prove to be a milestone in the field of education and will protect the interests of lakhs of students and parents in the state.
