Patiala:- On the occasion of International Plastic Bag Free Day, Gyan Jyoti Education Society (Regd.) Patiala organized an awareness event at Nehru Park. Patiala Mayor Kundan Gogia attended the event as the chief guest.
On this occasion, Mayor Kundan Gogia said that under the leadership of the society's president Upkar Singh, the organization has always been giving priority to works related to social welfare and environmental conservation. He said that plastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental challenges of today. Plastic is neither easily destroyed nor is it safe for the environment. During the rains, plastic bags also cause problems like waterlogging and floods by blocking drains.
Appealing to the people, he said that **"Say no to plastic bags, say yes to cotton cloth bags"** and the use of cloth bags should be adopted in daily life.
Mayor Gogia said that during the **"Clean Patiala, Green Patiala"** campaign launched under the leadership of Upkar Singh on June 21, Green Awards were also presented, which will be given every year to those organizations and environmentalists who make special contributions to the cleanliness of parks and environmental conservation.
Presiding over the event, Upkar Singh, President of Gyan Jyoti Education Society, said that earlier people used to prepare and use cloth bags in their homes, which was a very beneficial custom for the environment. He said that there is a need to re-adopt this tradition.
He said that today the whole world is struggling with the problem of environmental pollution and we ourselves are also responsible for this. He called on the young generation to come forward in creating a plastic-free society and said that if we do not take concrete steps from today, the coming generations will have to face serious consequences.
On this occasion, Mayor Kundan Gogia also took an oath not to use plastic. He praised the social work of Upkar Singh and said that from time to time he keeps organizing environmental conservation, no-plastic campaign, cleanliness campaign, medical camp, eye operation camp and other public welfare works. He said that the society has organized about 300 social service camps so far and needy students and needy families are also helped from time to time.
During the event, everyone also took a pledge to contribute together for environmental conservation and creation of a plastic-free society.
