New Delhi: Leading hyperscale data centre specialist AirTrunk plans to invest over Rs 3 lakh crore in India by 2030 to expand its digital infrastructure capacity, making India a key part of the company's global growth strategy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced the investment plans of Asia-Pacific and Middle East technology company AirTrunk and its strategy to develop 5GW (gigawatt) data centre capacity in India. The announcement was made after his meeting with AirTrunk founder and CEO Robin Khuda. The Prime Minister said in a post on X that India's digital infrastructure journey is gaining momentum. AirTrunk has announced plans to invest around Rs 3 lakh crore (US$ 30 billion) in India and develop 5GW of data centre capacity, one of the largest proposed investments in the country’s digital infrastructure ecosystem to date. PM Modi said such investments will strengthen India’s position as a global hub for cloud computing and AI (Artificial Intelligence), while creating employment opportunities, boosting local supply chains and accelerating innovation-driven growth. He said it is clear that the future of the world’s digital economy is increasingly being shaped in India. AirTrunk is a hyperscale data centre specialist that builds a platform for cloud, content and large corporate customers in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions. AirTrunk CEO Robin Khuda said that Prime Minister Modi’s vision for India’s digital economy has helped make it one of the world’s most attractive locations for technology investment. He said in a company statement that India has the scale, talent and enthusiasm to become a global AI powerhouse and AirTrunk is excited to support this vision. AirTrunk’s proposed investment plan, backed by Blackstone, one of the largest foreign investors in India, and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, will join one of the largest digital infrastructure campaigns currently underway in the country, which will help enable the next wave of growth in cloud and artificial intelligence. The company said in its statement that AirTrunk plans to invest over INR 3,000 billion (US$ 30 billion) in India by 2030 in support of digital infrastructure capabilities, making India the cornerstone of the company’s global growth strategy and one of the most important long-term investment markets. The company said that its proposed growth plan, spread across multiple states and union territories, will support its objective of making India a global destination for AI and cloud infrastructure investments, leading to large-scale economic activity, employment and growth of the technology ecosystem. The announcement comes after AirTrunk CEO Robin Khuda’s first senior government engagement program in India, after the company entered the Indian market through the acquisition of Lumina CloudInfra in April this year. Through this acquisition, AirTrunk’s current development projects in India include 600 MW of capacity in Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad. The company develops and operates data center campuses with industry-leading reliability, technology innovation and energy and water efficiency. Founded in 2015, AirTrunk established Australia’s first and largest hyperscale data center in 2017, after which it focused on rapid expansion and now operates a large platform of hyperscale data centers across the APME (Asia-Pacific and Middle East) region.
