Mohali, November 27, 2025:- In a surprising development, the Vice President of India, who is also the Chancellor of Panjab University, approved the long-pending Senate election programme just 24 hours after the Youth Congress’s “Lallkar March”. The move is being seen as a major victory for the protesting youth and students.
On November 26, thousands of Youth Congress workers gathered under the party flag and made serious allegations of “power grab” in Punjab by the BJP-led central government. They strongly opposed the attempts to bring Chandigarh under Article 240 and end the autonomy of Panjab University. During the rally, there was a clash with the police, barricades were broken and there was even a lathicharge.
Within a day, the Vice President’s Office confirmed the election calendar. The Senate election programme for the upcoming academic session has been announced.
Youth Congress leaders termed it a victory of public protest.
Mohali President Shubh Sekhon said,“The BJP was trying to snatch our rights, but the youth stood firm and fought for their rights.”
He also highly appreciated the dedication and contribution of the PU Bachao Morcha.
Panjab University officials said that with this notification, a permanent solution has been found to the democratic impasse that has been going on for more than a year.
