Ludhiana:- "ABO-incompatible (different blood group) kidney transplantation is changing the picture of treatment for patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease. Patients who undergo transplantation with this technique are living healthy and active lives with excellent kidney function."
Addressing a press conference in Ludhiana on Thursday, Dr. Raaka Kaushal, Senior Director - Nephrology, Livasa Hospital, Mohali, said that end-stage kidney disease is the last stage of chronic kidney disease, in which the kidneys completely lose their ability to remove waste products and excess fluid from the body. In this case, patients require dialysis or a kidney transplant to stay alive.
He further said, "India is witnessing a steady increase in kidney disease cases due to diabetes, high blood pressure and lifestyle-related diseases. While dialysis helps in maintaining life, kidney transplant is the best long-term treatment, which provides better lifespan, better quality of life and more independence."
Dr Avinash Srivastava, Senior Director-Urology and Kidney Transplant, said that through ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation, a successful transplant can be possible even when the blood group of the donor and recipient is different.
On this occasion, Veer Singh, who got a new lease of life after a successful ABO-incompatible kidney transplant at Livasa Mohali in 2017, also shared his experience of living a healthy life for the last 9 years.
