Chandigarh:- On the occasion of World Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a panel of senior cancer specialists from Park Hospital, Mohali, addressed a press conference today. They shared important facts about breast cancer and emphasised the urgent need for timely screening and early detection among Indian women.
Addressing the media, Dr. Sandeep Kukkar, Director, Medical Oncology, said that breast cancer had emerged as the most common cancer among women. He stated, “Around 2.1 million women worldwide are affected by breast cancer every year, while India reports approximately 1.90 lakh new cases annually.”
Dr. (Brigadier) Harinder Pal Singh, Director, Medical Oncology, said that the disease was increasingly affecting younger women as well. He stated, “More than 60 per cent of breast cancer patients in India are diagnosed at an advanced stage. The major reasons are low screening rates and social hesitation.”
Dr. Vijay Jagad, Senior Consultant, Surgical Oncology, said, “Breast cancer accounts for 27 per cent of all cancer cases among women in India. Simple techniques such as breast self-examination and mammography can help detect the disease at an early stage. Despite this, surveys indicate that 75 per cent of Indian women hesitate to undergo screening.”
Dr. Aman Kumar Vaid and Dr. Nitin Balachander, Consultants in Radiation Oncology, also emphasised that early detection increases the likelihood of better treatment outcomes.
On the occasion of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Ashish Chadha, Group CEO (North) of Park Hospitals, announced that Park Hospital, Mohali, is offering a 50 per cent discount on mammography screening until 31 October. In addition, PET-CT scans are being offered for ₹10,999.
