Sangrur, 3 September:- Under the directions of Director Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, a special extension activity was conducted at village Bharur by PAU-Farm Advisory Service Centre, Sangrur to promote cultivation of winter season vegetables in kitchen garden. During this, 30 demonstrations related to winter season vegetables were set up in the village.
In-charge and Senior Extension Scientist of Farm Advisory Service Centre, Sangrur Dr. Ashok Kumar Garg gave practical and scientific information to farmers regarding selection of vegetables, suitable time of sowing, proper use of fertilizers, irrigation and maintenance of kitchen garden.
Dr. Garg said that in today's time the importance of kitchen garden has increased even more. By proper use of a little space around the house, many types of fresh vegetables can be easily produced as per daily requirement of the family. He said that through kitchen garden, along with continuous availability of fresh, clean and nutritious vegetables to the family, the expenditure incurred on buying vegetables from the market can also be reduced. He said that vegetables can also be cultivated as per household requirement at suitable places near tubewells in fields or at other suitable places.
Dr. Garg said that month of September is suitable time for sowing many important winter season vegetables. He advised farmers to sow broccoli, peas, radish, carrot, turnip and various leafy vegetables in time, so that favourable conditions can be created for better yield.
On this occasion, farmers were also given information about balanced nutrient management in paddy and use of potassium nitrate to reduce sterility. He said that to reduce sterility in paddy and improve grain filling, spraying of 1.5 percent potassium nitrate (13:0:45) on leaves at booting stage is recommended. For this, 3 kg potassium nitrate can be dissolved in 200 litres of water and sprayed per acre.
**Appeal for maximum participation in Kisan Melas
On this occasion, Dr. Garg gave detailed information to farmers about Kisan Melas being organized by Punjab Agricultural University during September 2026. He appealed to farmers to participate in maximum numbers in these melas and get information about new techniques of agriculture, improved varieties, farm machinery and latest recommendations of the University.
He said that along with scientific farming, cultivation of vegetables at domestic level is an important step for family income, nutrition and proper use of natural resources. He motivated farmers to give priority to new and scientific techniques in farming by adopting recommendations of Punjab Agricultural University.
In successful organization of demonstrations, S. Balwinder Singh of the village, S. Gurpreet Singh (Sarpanch), S. Karnail Singh (Numberdar) and S. Gurdeep Singh gave special cooperation. In the end, the team also visited the kitchen garden of S. Gurdeep Singh and the demonstration of Kharif season maize of S. Balwinder Singh.
