
AIMS Mohali observes International Day of older persons 2025
SAS Nagar, October 2: Dr. B. R. Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) Mohali joined the global observance of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons, themed “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being and Our Rights.”

The institute highlighted its pioneering Home Visiting Program for Elderly with Complex Needs, initiated in December 2024 with the guidance of Dr. Niharika Suchak (USA). Since then, every Saturday, an interdisciplinary team led by Dr. Esha Arora has been visiting elderly patients at home, providing holistic support across medical, nursing, and social domains.
Dr. Amrit Virk , Professor and Head Community Medicine is spearheading the development of an interprofessional module on geriatric care, ensuring capacity-building of healthcare workers. The initiative is aligned with the National Framework for Elderly Care, Government of India, making AIMS Mohali one of the early adopters of structured community-based geriatric services.
Dr. Ashish Goel, Professor & Head Medicine and immediate past President of the Geriatric Society of India, reaffirmed the importance of popularizing geriatric medicine, while Dr. Bhavneet Bharti, Director Principal, emphasized the institute’s unique “4M approach” (Mobility, Mentation, Medication, and what Matters most) to ensure dignity and well-being for older persons.
The initiative reflects AIMS Mohali’s vision of making older persons not just recipients of care, but active partners and agents of change in society, added Dr Bhavneet Bharti.
