Nawanshahr- Red Cross Integrated Rehabilitation Center for Drug Victims Nawanshahr, as per the directions of Honorable Secretary, Shivdular Singh Dhillon, (Retd. IAS) Indian Red Cross Society, Punjab State, Branch, Chandigarh, in collaboration with Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gramin Council Scheme, celebrated International Older Persons Day at Doaba Group of Colleges, Rahon (Nawanshahr) Complex. This seminar was presided over by Mr. Raj Kumar, Social Mobilization Officer, Nawanshahr.
On this occasion, first of all, Sardar Chaman Singh, Project Director, informed the students about this day and said that ‘International Older Persons Day’ was celebrated for the first time on 1st October 1991. This year, the day is celebrated on the theme “Elderly people drive local and global action: Our aspirations, our well-being and our rights”.
On this occasion, he said that we see and hear that from the birth of a child, elders used to have a high place in his/her activities. He did not even think of doing any work without asking the elders. Even today, many young people do not do any work without asking their parents. If everyone respects the elders, then they would not have to resort to orphanages or old age homes. The elderly play an important role in the society through their knowledge, experience and cultural contribution.
So today, there is a need to respect the elders. If we do not serve the elders, then do not think that we are living a luxurious life because of money and fame. This is the income of our elders. In a house where the elders are not respected, there is no use in organizing langar, building rooms in religious places and dharamshalas or doing other charity after their departure. The things shown by the elders act as a guide for the family.
Serving and respecting them is our first duty. On this occasion, Raj Kumar, Social Mobilization Officer, Nawanshahr, also called this day special and said that we should all respect the elders. Whatever we are in our lives today, we are only because of the elders. The elders have a lot of experience in their entire life. On this occasion, everyone including the students and the college staff took a pledge that they will respect their elders and will always be ready to serve them.
On this occasion, Shampi (teacher) conducted the stage well. College staff members Tania, Navjot, Manpreet, Suman Shalu, Kajal, Narinder Kaur were present.
On this special day, a seminar was organized at the Red Cross Center. Addressing the patients admitted at the center, Project Director Chaman Singh said that it is the primary duty of all of us to respect the elderly. The elderly have the experience of a lifetime, if we follow the guidelines given by them, then we can stay away from all the bad things in our lives.
On this occasion, all the staff members and patients took a pledge that we will respect our elderly. Kamaljit Kaur, Jaswinder Kaur, Dinesh Kumar, Kulwant Singh, Manjot, Kamla Rani, Parveen Kumari were present on this occasion.
