SAS Nagar, July 5 – Constituency MLA S. Kulwant Singh has said that the municipal elections to be held in April 2026 will be held on time. During a special conversation with Sky Hawk Times, he said that there is no obstacle in the way of holding municipal elections and these elections will be held before time in any case. It is worth mentioning that for some time there have been speculations that the elections of Municipal Corporation SAS Nagar can be postponed by the Punjab government.
The reason for this is that while the municipal elections of the state were postponed earlier by the AAP government, it is also being said that despite the proposal to include the areas adjoining the city in the corporation being passed in the Municipal Corporation meeting, no action has been taken by the government on this and this proposal of the corporation is gathering dust in government files.
The areas to be included in the Municipal Corporation by the Municipal Corporation include Balongi, TDI, Baliali, Sector 90-91 (JLPL), Sector 88-89 and other areas, which have been approved in the Municipal Corporation meeting, but this proposal of the Corporation has not yet been approved by the Local Government Department of the Punjab Government and this work is hanging in the middle.
It is being said in this regard that even if the proposal of the Corporation regarding inclusion of these areas in the limits of the Municipal Corporation is approved by the Punjab Government, it will still take more than three months to make these areas a part of the Municipal Corporation in practical form.
The reason for this is that the areas to be included in the Municipal Corporation also include some villages, whose proposals need to be passed by the Panchayats and this may take time. After this, it may also take a lot of time to do the ward demarcation and after the ward demarcation, the work of preparing ward wise voter lists will also have to be done and then it is also necessary to give time for claims and objections regarding the voter lists.
Talking about these developments, S. Kulwant Singh said that all this will be completed in the stipulated time. He said that the current term of the Municipal Corporation is still more than nine months away and during this time all these actions can be completed very easily and the Municipal Corporation elections will be completed before the scheduled time. The Municipal Corporation elections were held on 14 February 2021, the results of which were released on 17 February.
Later on 21 April 2021, the newly elected councilors were sworn in and on the same day the election of the Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation was completed. According to this, the current term of the Municipal Corporation is going to end on 12 April 2026 and according to the claim of the constituency MLA S. Kulwant Singh, new elections will be conducted by the Punjab Government before that.
