A review meeting for the project "Roadmap for Replacing Trans Fats with Healthy Oils in India" was held on 30 August 2024 at PGIMER, Chandigarh. This important initiative is a collaboration between the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL). The project aims to develop a strategy to replace harmful trans fats with healthier oil alternatives across India.
The meeting was led by Professor J. S. Thakur, Principal Investigator from PGIMER, and brought together key stakeholders, including RTSL India and the project team. Prof Thakur highlighted the severe health risks associated with trans-fat consumption, which significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases by 23%. He emphasized the need to address cultural and behavioral practices contributing to trans-fat consumption, urging swift action to combat non-communicable diseases through dietary changes.
RTSL's collaboration will provide the technical support required to create a detailed work plan. The project will explore policy approaches to reduce the importation of oils, particularly palm oil, and promote the domestic production of healthier alternatives. This effort is expected to significantly reduce or eliminate trans fat consumption in India, leading to better public health outcomes.
Dr. Amit Arun Shah, CEO of RTSL India, outlined RTSL's broader vision and ongoing programs, while Dr. Swati Bhardwaj, Senior Technical Advisor - Nutrition, reviewed progress in eliminating trans fats. Dr. Thakur also shared updates on the "Healthier Oil Study" for strategic planning. The meeting concluded with discussions on the challenges and recommendations for the project's success.
PGIMER and RTSL’s collaborative efforts are poised to create a healthier future free from trans fats. The meeting was attended by Dr. Nancy Sahni, Chief Dietician, PGI, Prof. Sanjay Jain, Dean Research, PGI, and Prof. R.K. Ratho, Academic PGIMER, who praised the team's efforts.
